Google Panda 4.2 Slowly Rolling Out

Google tells Search Engine Land that it pushed out a Google Panda refresh this weekend.

Many of you may not have noticed because this rollout is happening incredibly slowly. In fact, Google says the update can take months to fully roll out. That means that although the Panda algorithm is still site-wide, some of your Web pages might not see a change immediately.

The last time we had an official Panda refresh was almost 10 months ago: Panda 4.1 happened on September 25, 2014. That was the 28th update, but I would coin this the 29th or 30th update, since we saw small fluctuations in October 2014.

As far as I know, very few webmasters noticed a Google update this weekend. That is how it should be, since this Panda refresh is rolling out very slowly.

Google said this affected about 2%–3% of English language queries.

Google Drops Local Carousel For Hotels, Restaurants & Other Local Listings

Google is dropping its horizontal Carousel display of local search results in several categories: restaurants, nightlife, entertainment and hotels. It’s being replaced by a 3-pack of organic listings and some new secondary pages.

The Local Carousel rolled out in June, 2013 for the PC in the US and gradually expanded to a number of categories beyond local results (e.g., US Presidents). It’s not clear whether it will remain for these non-local search results.

Since day one the Carousel has been controversial among local SEOs and even among those involved in the European antitrust negotiations with Google (it has not launched in Europe). Here’s what the Carousel looked like yesterday for the query “New York hotels”:

Beyond the SEO questions and concerns raised by others, I have always found the Carousel to be limiting and awkwardly disconnected from the rest of the page. Below is a screen showing the new 3-Pack results for the same search for “New York hotels”:

The new 3-Pack will appear below the top AdWords results. The 3-Pack results are not ads; they’re the top algorithmically ranked listings. Users will then be able to click any of those three and land on a new business profile page similar to what users might see or have seen in a Knowledge Graph panel for the hotel or other local business.

In the case of hotels you’ll be able to see pricing and room availability, as you can today in the Knowledge Graph panel. In the hotels category, but not in other local categories (today), the business details page may include an ad unit (tied to booking).

Clicking on the “more” link at the bottom of the 3-Pack takes users into a full page of local results that can be sorted. There’s a large map on the right. This is not unlike a page that would have been seen in earlier versions of Google Maps results.

Clicking on any of these local links will take users to the details page for that entity.

This new presentation and flow removes the awkwardness of the Carousel and enables the display of more information. Clicking on any of the old Carousel results simply changed the Knowledge Graph panel but didn’t provide any additional information depth.

Let us know if you’re seeing these new 3-Pack pages and for what categories. The new pages and flow only appear on the PC and not in mobile.

Microsoft and Dropbox announce surprise partnership for Office integration

Microsoft has cozied up to Dropbox with a new partnership.

Soon you'll be able to easily access, save, share and collaborate on your Office 365 documents stored on Dropbox without leaving Office.

Office 365 is Microsoft's paid cloud version of Microsoft Office.

But wait, there's more. Dropbox will also be available as an option for Microsoft's freebie version of Office in its cloud, known as Office Online.

And this isn't a Windows-only deal. You'll be able to use your Dropbox account inside of Office on your iPhone, iPad or Android tablet.

It's yet another symbol of the kinder, gentler Microsoft under new CEO Satya Nadella. He's willing to partner with companies instead of compete with them, and customers win.

Office 365 comes with its own cloud storage, called OneDrive — and now OneDrive offers an unbeatable deal: the paid version comes with unlimited storage.

But Dropbox is a major go-to cloud storage option for Office documents, particularly those using older, not-cloud versions. Dropbox users have currently stashed away more than 35 billion Office files, which allows them to collaborate on documents with co-workers without buying into Microsoft's cloud version of Office.

So this partnership is super smart on Microsoft's part. It's another on ramp to encourage people to ditch their old version of Office and sign up for the fancy new cloud version, and they can still use Dropbox with their existing files and and work with colleagues just like they are used to doing. And of course, there's now an extra incentive to switch over to OneDrive.

Microsoft will make more money on its cloud app over time, since users must pay annually for it. But it's not a bad deal for users, because you get more features for the extra money, such as the ability to install the software on multiple devices.

Dropbox support will be available to Office 365 users in 2015, Microsoft says.

This partnership isn't unique, by the way. Dropbox competitor, Box, has been working with Office 365 since last month.

New Gmail 5.0 for Android now available on Google Play Store

Starting from today, the new redesigned Gmail 5.0 will be available for download from the Google Play Store. On checking the Google India Play Store, the update was not yet added, so we are assuming it will launch shortly in a phased manner. Interestingly, the Gmail 5.0 app was available in the APK format  to be downloaded yesterday.

According to the official Gmail Blog, there will now be a convenient reply button at the bottom of every message, making it quick and easy to continue a conversation when you’re on the go. Also, if users access the app on their Android tablet, you can notice it’s easier to switch between accounts and the different inbox categories. The updated Gmail app will support all Android 4.0+ devices.

The Gmail 5.0, different from Inbox, is the redesigned Gmail app which features Material Design and comes with support for adding multiple email accounts. The Gmail app will now support Exchange Active Sync and will also operate as an email client to take a hold of your messages from Yahoo, AOL, Outlook, or other POP3/IMAP accessible services.

Another feature is instant auto-updating of email threads. This will show you the reply in its entirety instead of just giving you a notification or alert of a reply, when you are in the same email thread.

Mozilla Will Launch A New Browser For Developers Next Week

Mozilla today announced that it will launch a new browser dedicated to developers next week. What exactly that will look like remains to be seen, as the company today only teased the launch, which is scheduled for November 10 — the same day Firefox celebrates its 10th anniversary. What Mozilla did say, however, is that the new browser is meant to allow developers to “debug the whole Web” without having to switch between tools.

“When building for the Web, developers tend to use a myriad of different tools which often don’t work well together,” the organization wrote in its announcement today. “This means you end up switching between different tools, platforms and browsers which can slow you down and make you less productive.”

Both Mozilla’s WebIDE project and the Firefox Tools Adaptor for connecting the Firefox dev tools to other major browser engines will be part of this new browser. Otherwise, however, Mozilla remains mum on the details of what it is planning to announce next week.

That kind of secrecy is pretty unusual for the open source organization which typically streams its weekly project meetings live and has often shared design studies for user interface updates long before they landed in its most experimental release channels.

It definitely makes sense for Firefox to launch this kind of dedicated developer browser, however. Mozilla invested heavily into its developer tools over the last few years and with its recent (and somewhat controversial focus) on mobile with its Firefox OS project, it has launched a number of new tools, too. All of these additions have made the built-in developer tools a bit unwieldy, though, and while the latest versions of Firefox allow you to customize your browser more easily, the developer tools aren’t necessarily front and center there either.
